Teeth bleaching solutions to give you a bright smile

Looking for that bright Hollywood smile? Genuine Smiles provides teeth whitening procedures that will remove stains and teeth discolouration.

Why people consider teeth whitening:

Yellowing teeth is one of the most obvious signs of aging. Before we discuss dental whitening, it is important to consider the reasons why some people have yellow teeth:

Here are some reasons why teeth can be yellow:

  • Aging: The older we get, the yellower our teeth become.
  • Genetics: Some people are just born with yellow teeth.
  • Smokers stains: Besides being bad for your health in general, another disadvantage of smoking is that you get yellow teeth.
  • Food staining: Coffee and tea drinking, chocolates and red wine all stain your teeth.
  • Tetracycline stains: In the past, certain antibiotics were given to children aged under 16 years old (the crucial years in tooth development). Unfortunately, these types of antibiotics also lead to irreversible, internal ugly staining of teeth. We know better today and do not prescribe tetracycline-based antibiotics to children any more.
  • Poor oral hygiene: This simply means that if you don’t brush your teeth every day, they will form orange, yellow, brown or even green stains.
  • Tooth decay: If your diet is high in sugary foods and beverages and you don’t regularly brush your teeth, you have a high risk of developing carious lesions or tooth decay. Besides a breakdown in tooth structure, tooth decay can appear as a greyish-black discolouration. In this case, a filling is necessary to restore the tooth back to its original colour and shape.
  • Pulp necrosis: When a tooth is traumatised either from an accident or extensive tooth decay, it can become necrotic. The tooth then appears greyish-black. In this case, endodontic treatment is necessary.
  • Disturbance in tooth development: At times, the permanent teeth erupt with brownish-yellow or white patches. This could be due to trauma sustained on the deciduous teeth (baby teeth) before the permanent successor has had time to fully develop.  A disturbance of the development of the enamel of the permanent tooth, results in the formation of brownish-yellow patches.

Teeth whitening treatment options

  • Laser: Laser teeth whitening is a popular and effective option. This technique uses highly concentrated formulas that combine with activity triggered by the heat and light of the laser to accelerate the process.
  • Bleaching: Most make use of teeth bleaching trays, are which are custom-fit to ensure effective gel application over your teeth.

So what can you expect from the bleaching process at Genuine Smiles?

The take-home hydrogen peroxide teeth whitening approach we use is the most effective way to brighten your smile. It is a ‘Day White’ Teeth Bleaching System which is effective and safe with minimal side effects. The procedure requires at least two short visits.

The procedure requires at least 2 short visits.

First Visit

Moulds are taken of your teeth so we can construct custom-made bleaching trays for your mouth. A photo record of your smile is taken and additionally, a record of the colour (called a shade) of the teeth is taken, so that the effect of the whitening can be accurately measured

Second Visit

We provide you with the Tooth Whitening Kit and fit the custom bleaching trays. Detailed instructions are given, so you can get the most out of the system. It involves wearing the bleaching trays for 30 minutes a day for 18 days, as well as abstaining from foods and beverages that promote teeth staining.

You will receive a follow-up phone call after the 18 days just to see how things went.

Common Side Effects

The most commonly observed side effects with these peroxide-based bleaching agents are tooth sensitivity and occasional irritation of soft tissues in the mouth. Both tooth sensitivity and tissue irritation are usually temporary and stop after the treatment is completed. On rare occasions, irreversible tooth damage has been reported.

How To Keep Your Bright Smile

The results with this whitening system is permanent; however, everyone’s teeth will get darker over time (whether or not you have ever whitened your teeth). If you take care of your bleaching trays, and only minor changes are done to your teeth over the years, you can maintain your beautiful smile by simply purchasing a professional touch up kit.
