Why are dentists involved in sleep apnoea?

Sleep apnoea is a disease of the cranio-facial anatomy, which means that dentists are on the front line of recognition for clinical signs of sleep disordered breathing.

Do you have any of the following symptoms:

  1. Waking up tired in the morning
  2. Not feeling refreshed when you wake up in the morning
  3. Snoring
  4. Clench or grind your teeth
  5. Yawning throughout the day
  6. Nodding off easily when you sit on the couch when you are watching TV
  7. Falling asleep as soon as your head hits the pillow at night
  8. Reflux can also be associated with sleep disordered breathing
  9. Waking at night to go to the toilet on a regular basis
  10. Waking up in the morning with headaches

There are two types of sleep apnoea:

  • Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA): This is caused by the blockage of your airways, usually when the soft tissue in the back of the throat collapses during sleep. This is the more common one and the one we deal with.
  • Central sleep apnoea: The brain fails to signal the muscles to breathe due to the instability of the respiratory control centre.

Snoring solutions to try out at home

Appropriate sleep apnoea treatments involve one or more of the following:

  1. An assessment by a sleep physician
  2. Possible referral to an Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) Specialist
  3. The use of a CPAP machine
  4. The construction of a Mandibular Advancement Splint
